Welcome to the From Africa to Patagonia Digital Archive!

Here you will find documents on the Language, Culture, and History of the Boer community in Patagonia, Argentina. Researchers can find historical letters, official documents, images, and periodicals in Spanish, English, Afrikaans, and Dutch that date from the Boers' arrival in Argentina in 1902 to the 1980s.  
  
This digital archive was assembled by the members of the Humanities Collaboratory project From Africa to Patagonia: Voices of Displacement at the University of Michigan. This project is led by an interdisciplinary research team investigating the unique linguistic and cultural contact between spanish and Afrikaans in Patagonia, Argentina.


This growing collection is based on the Brian Murray du Toit Collection at Yale, the Biblioteca Digital Hispánica, and materials donated by community member Sarie DeLanger. We are constantly updating, so keep an eye out for new sources!

Aquí encontrará documentos sobre el idioma, la cultura y la historia de la comunidad boer en la Patagonia argentina. La colección contiene cartas históricas, documentos oficiales y periódicos en español, inglés, afrikáans, y holandés que datan de la llegada de los Boers a Argentina en 1902 hasta lo década de 1980.

Este archivo digital fue recopilado por los miembros del proyecto Del África a la Patagonia: Las voces del desplazamiento con el auspicio del Humanities Collaboratory de la Universidad de Michigan. El proyecto cuenta con la participación de un equipo interdisciplinario de investigadores que estudian la situación de contacto lingüístico y cultural entre español y afrikáans en la Patagonia argentina. Esta situación de contacto es única en el mundo.

    A collection of newspapers and interview excerpts that detail the Afrikaners' desire to preserve their culture in the context of Argentina from 1902 to the present day. Other collections:

    Documents related to the period leading up to the arrival of the first South African immigrants in Argentina and covering the establishment of families there during the next two decades. Other collections:

    Letters, newspaper articles, maps, and church records that document the Afrikaners' efforts to establish schools and churches in Argentina. The majority of the documents span from 1920-1940. Other collections:

  • La cenicienta del sur (1921)
    An argument against the view of Patagonia as a backwards and savage region. Published 1921
  • El problema del agua en la zona de Comodoro Rivadavia (1919)
    The scarcity of water in the zone of Comodoro Rivadavia is explored. Much of the water used by the people and la Explotación del Petróleo is transported from surrounding farms and springs. Behr's land is cited as a current resource, and the article mentions Visser's springs as another possible source along with other local landowners. Published 1919
  • La granja patagonica (1919)
    A description of the various agriculture industries found in Patagonia, including the production of milk, eggs, rabbits, and doves. Commentary on techniques used in the region and the scarcity of such products is included, as well as pictures of Colonia Escalante and a description of milk production by Don Emilio Berger. Published 1919
  • Un cultivo patagonico de porvenir: La alfalfa (1919)
    An article lauding the usefulness of alfalfa as a crop in Comodoro Rivadavia due to its hardiness. It can thrive in spite of extreme temperatures and harsh winds, even growing in ravines. Includes photographs of alfalfa in Colonia Escalante on the lands of F.J. Behr and M.M. Venter. Published 1919
  • La patagonia agricola: formación de reparos forestales (1919)
    A report on how large, fast-growing trees are planted in Patagonia in order to protect more vulnerable fruit trees and other crops from the harsh wind. The Boers in particular use this method; the article shows photos of poplar trees planted in Colonia Escalante as well as a large pine planted by Mr. Venter. Published 1919
  • Captación de agua en Comodoro Rivadavia (1919)
    The insufficiency of running water in Comodoro Rivadavia is discussed. Currently, the oil company La Explotación del Petróleos sells water at 0.50 cents per cubic meter, paying the owner of lot 26 twenty thousand pesos every year to extract water. However, the article informs us that this action is contrary to a 1912 decree declaring that the water in the lot is a public utility. The article ends with the hope that this issue will soon be recognized and resolved by the government. Published 1919
